Bite-Size Summary

Despite being a victim of childhood sexual abuse, clinical psychologist Alexandra Waters believes her clients can be rehabilitated. But her faith wavers when a convicted criminal she helped free is suspected of killing women. At first, Alex refuses to believe in her former client’s guilt. However, in view of the greater good, she teams up with former flame Detective Zachery Stone to solve the case. Working together rekindles their attraction. As danger mounts, they put the past aside to catch a serial killer before he strikes again.

Why I Love the Book

Must I count the ways? I haven’t read any mysteries/suspense novels for a long time, but when I received Body of Lies from Ms. Savoy I couldn’t put it down. Suspense is this author’s forte. This story kept me on the edge of my seat. The characters aren’t cardboard cutouts: Although Alex was victimized as a child, she is not a victim. Although Zachery broke her heart years ago, the author doesn’t vilify him. Both characters learn from their mistakes and become better individuals.

The chemistry between Alex and Zachery is palpable. It builds on their romantic history and evolves with the story. As far the chase to catch the killer, talk about spellbinding. Ms. Savoy wields her pen as expertly as the greats of mystery/suspense fiction, including Mary Higgins Clark. I simply could not figure out the killer’s identity but I knew he was integral in the story, and I didn’t want to put the book down until I had all the answers.

I also loved how this story played with gray areas. No character was pure good or pure evil, not even the killer. Ms. Savoy portrayed him in such a way that I was able to feel compassion for him and the pathology that drove him to commit his crimes.

Additional Kudos for

Although I didn’t read the first book in this series, Body of Truth, I had no trouble enjoying or following the plot of this story. I also think the cover of Body of Lies is a HUGE improvement over the one for the first book. So that kudos goes to the Art Department at Kensington Dafina.

Recommendation

A very satisfying read. For lovers of mystery and/or romantic suspense, this is definitely one to add to the library.
